The "Grand Union," is considered the first "true" flag of the United States. Known also as the "Continental Flag," it combines the British King's colors with the thirteen stripes representing the original colonies. Its design was apparently so popular with General George Washington that he ordered it to be flown in celebration of the Continental Army's formation on New Year's Day, 1776, on Prospect Hill in Somerville.
