Flag for the 10th Massachusetts Regiment. It's motto: "We are One," reminiscent of the Latin phrase found on the back of an American dollar "E Pluribus Unum," translated as "Out of Many, One." The chain motif would appear also on the first issue of U.S. coins. Additionally, the first Senate meeting in Philadelphia from 1790-1800 includes it on their carpet in Congress Hall. Whether the new union could survive would depend on whether these individual states could hold strong together. The 10th Massachusetts Regiment Flag is a commitment to this principle. The flag was captured by Burgoyne, at Fort Anne, NY. Unit sees action at Saratoga and Monmouth.
