John also served at the the American fortress at West Point, situated high above the Hudson River. It was a key military location, since artillery aimed at the Hudon River could effectively control the Hudson and cutoff New York and most of New England. Control of West Point might very well have meant victory for Britain had it fallen into the hands of British forces.
